When it comes to capturing those special moments with your loved ones, finding the perfect backdrop is key. At Elusive Photography, based in Falmouth, we understand that the right setting can elevate your family photos from ordinary to extraordinary. Portland, Maine, offers a plethora of stunning locations that are perfect for family photography. Whether you’re looking for a picturesque beach, vibrant urban scenery, or serene natural landscapes, the Greater Portland Area has it all. Let's dive into some of the best family photo locations in this charming coastal city!
1. Eastern Promenade
One of Portland's crown jewels, the Eastern Promenade is a must-visit for any family photo shoot. This waterfront park provides breathtaking views of Casco Bay and is framed by lush greenery. The panoramic vistas make for a fantastic backdrop, especially during golden hours when the sun casts a warm glow over the water. Bring a picnic blanket for a cozy family shot or explore the walking paths for candid moments. Family photos here will not only capture your family’s essence but also the stunning beauty of Portland’s coastline.
2. Fort Williams Park
If you want a bit of history with your family photos, Fort Williams Park is the place to be. Home to the iconic Portland Head Light, this park offers a stunning blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Imagine your family standing in front of the lighthouse, with waves crashing in the background. The expansive lawns, rocky shores, and scenic paths make it easy to find the perfect spot for capturing genuine smiles and playful interactions. Trust me, the kids will love exploring the fort while we snap away!
3. Kettle Cove/Crescent Beach - Cape Elizabeth
These beaches are the crown jewel of Maine Sunsets. Most of my family portraits are taken on one of these two beaches, both of which offer beautiful landscapes. Kettle Cove Beach offers jagged rocks, cliff areas, a sandy beach, fishing boats, and trails. This is a westerly facing beach, so we get gorgeous sunset views here. Crescent Beach State Park is the same beach, but further around the corner, and it faces S/E, so we get the cooler and pinker skies of the sunset. This is a gorgeous soft sand beach with lovely grasses and a fun vintage swing set.
4. The Old Port
The Old Port district is a vibrant and lively area filled with cobblestone streets, colorful storefronts, and an inviting waterfront. It’s perfect for capturing the hustle and bustle of Portland while still creating intimate family moments. You can snap some fun shots in front of the iconic lobster traps or find a cozy café for a more relaxed vibe. The Old Port is ideal for families who want to showcase the city’s character and charm in their family photography.
5. Kennebunkport
Kennebunkport is a great place for capturing that classic, coastal Maine look. There is easy access to the rocky coast, but also a beach, lots of cute boats on the river, and a town center with adorable cedar shingle shops, quaint seating areas, and floral landscaping. If you’re vacationing in the area, Kennebunkport is an excellent place to take portraits for couples, seniors, maternity sessions, and small families.
6. Mackworth Island
If you’re looking for a more tranquil setting, Mackworth Island is an excellent choice. This peaceful spot is just a short drive from Portland and features lovely trails and stunning views of Casco Bay. The island's natural beauty and serene atmosphere are perfect for capturing authentic family moments. Pack a lunch and enjoy a picnic while we capture those candid, joyous interactions that define your family. Plus, the sandy shores are a hit with kids!
7. Falmouth Town Landing
For something a little different and nautical, consider Falmouth Town Landing. This is great if you want to have a family dinner on the water after photos, and if you are looking for a boat-filled backdrop. This part of the coast faces S/E, so you’ll get pink and purple skies at sunset. There are rocks, boats, water, piers, and more - this is really a stunning location. It is small, though, so it’s ideal for families who are mobility limited, and is not great for kids who want to run around.
8. Willard Beach - South Portland
This beach used to have the classic Maine Fishing Shacks, until they unfortunately got destroyed in the late winter storms of 2024. This beach is still gorgeous, though, and is great for families with dogs. It’s a sandy beach that winds around to a rocky cliff area. The beach faces east, so it’s a particularly great sunrise beach! This is also great for vacationing families because it is close to lots of delicious restaurants and to downtown Portland.
8. Deering Oaks Park
Deering Oaks Park is another fantastic option, especially in the fall when the leaves turn vibrant shades of red and orange. The park is filled with open spaces, beautiful trees, and even a lovely pond. It’s a great spot for letting the kids run around while we capture those authentic, joyful moments. Whether you’re posing on the swings or enjoying a playful moment in the leaves, Deering Oaks is sure to provide the perfect setting for your family photos.
